COMPUTER ENCOURAGES TEACHER SEDENTARINESS

Note: We all need to guard against becoming deskbound by computer demands. Proportion is necessary.

The teacher needs in terms of planning, preparation, recording and data inputting, along with other benefits, have come a long way since pen, paper and later typewriters. Without a doubt, computer and iPad options have been enhancing teachers in preparing documentation, researching and recording.

With modern educational emphasis focused on data and recording, there is a tendency for teachers to become desk-bound and screen-focussed, inserting information and results into their electronic records. That is fine, but we ought not forget the importance of moving around the classroom and engaging with students. Personal contact is essential and can quickly become lost because of screen fixation.

Another ‘beware point’ is watching children not engage in activities that offer ‘filler’ time for teachers as they manage their computers. Silent reading is an example. There needs to be a focus on sustained silent reading (SSR), an activity outcome. It ought not to be a period that is provided to facilitate administration.

Be conscious of the need to move around the classroom between, among and engaging with students. Children value contact and appreciate teachers who take an interest in them individually and in the class.
