What is your all time favorite automobile?
My favourite vehicle without any doubt is the Mini Moke. I had a Mini Moke in the 1970s and we took it as our vehicle to Warburton Ranges in 1974. For the time that we were there in 1974/75, it was our vehicle that took us everywhere.
I will never forget that I transported 19 of our students on one trip. The journey was over 14 km to a waterhole so that students could go swimming. They all fitted into and on every part of the Moke for the trip there and back.
I had never driven so far with so many in what must’ve been the slowest journey on record.
When we left Western Australia and went to camp in the Northern Territory, the mini Moke went with us and again it was a vehicle that gave us four years of transportation as a family.
At the end of 1978, we transferred to Angurugu on Groote Eylandt. With a growing family in terms of the size of our children, we bought another more conventional vehicle and I also have School provided utility.
The mini Moke of service faithfully and well but it was starting to show it she is and was very much suffering from fatigue. I don’t hate it to our manual arts group so that they could learn a little with their teachers about motor mechanics.
I have had lots of vehicles over the years but that Mini Moke, which was red like the one in the attached picture, was by far and away the very best for you I have ever owned.
