Rough and tumble of sport is what counts

Spectators get off on violence associated with contact sport.They love it and want it as part of the spectacle of the game.

Physical clashes are what offer the ‘wow’ factor. If it was about pure skill rather than the fierce clashing that goes on, football crowds would be a lot less.

This of course goes with all sport for it is the underside (clashing, sledging and put downs) that are excitement drivers. That is because top level sport is not sport – it’s a business and ‘bang for buck’ counts.
