I wonder whether part of the motivation to disallow abortion has to do with America’s population being reduced by the number of senseless killings happening during mass shootings. Is it all about rebuilding the population base?

Not likely. There were ~ 700 deaths in 2023 from mass shootings and over one million abortions.
