GETTING BORN IN 1946

Share what you know about the year you were born.

I was born at Nazareth House in Geraldton on 24 February 1946.

These days Nazareth House in Geraldton is a retirement village and a care place for old people. So, 77 years on from the place of my birth, should I look at going back to Nazareth house as the place in which to spend my last days before dying?

1946 was a lot different to 2023.

Then, there were just under 7,000,000 people in Australia. Now, we have a population of 27,000,000 and it is growing like Topsy.

There were lots of “no’s”’.

No television.

No regular communication possibilities other than by letter or expensive telegram costing two and sixpence for 12 words. That is equivalent to substantial dollars in today’s currency.

Nothing of a technological nature at all without going into detail – that of course means “no“ to at least 5000 benefits coming from life these days.

No lack of good manners, and caring for others.

No lack of respect for parents, school teachers, authorities, and so on.

Much less pretending to be authorities about things that you knew little about, as is the case today.

Much less talking particularly getting out of turn and a lot more listening, resulting in better comprehension.

No calculators and gadgets to undertake processes and find answers to questions, where those answers and processes were not understood by the person working them out.

In education, no overlooking the importance of handwriting, spelling, grammatical understanding, history, and the basics of morality.

Forgive me, but I think the olden days were good days.
